Men’s hairstyle forecast – Summer/Fall 2016

Men’s hair in 2016 continues in the same vein as last year, with a focus being on vintage styles, showcasing classic barbering techniques.  Side part, technical tapering, and pomade-style products continue to dominate men’s hair fashion. There are a couple of looks that are rising above the competition, however. From opposite ends of the spectrum come the Pompadour, and the Modern Crew Cut.

The Modern Crew Cut is a short, no-nonsense haircut, inspired by military barbering. The hair is faded closely through the sides and back, with a smooth blend to “finger length” layering on top. This look is low maintenance in the styling department, but expect to get a trim every 2-3 weeks to keep this high and tight cut looking sharp. Additional flair can be added with a barber providing straight-razor edging along the hairline and neckline.

The Pompadour is a classic that has made a vigorous return. Initially popularized in the 1950’s by the likes of Elvis Presley and Little Richard, the cut features neatly trimmed sides and back, with the top swept back and styled for height and volume. As opposed to the shorter and less variable crew cut, the Pompadour can take several forms, from neat to messy, shiny to matte.  A few of the celebrities wearing pompadour styles recently show off its variations, from the groomed, side-parted version worn by Justin Timberlake, to the more textured sweep seen on Bruno Mars, to the sky-high extravagance of Adam Lambert.  Because the Pompadour can be worn longer, it doesn’t need to be trimmed as often, with haircuts generally falling around 3-4 weeks.  Be aware, however, that this is not a wash and go style. Blow drying with appropriate styling products is required.
